Book Review - Gem & Dixie by Sara Zarr

Sara Zarr's Gem & Dixie addressed a lot of situations that could happen to a teenager in a real life case.

Gem and Dixie have to face their teen years alone with no adult to rely on. Their mom is a total disaster and their dad is not even around. The theme of this book is neglect. The parents of Gem and Dixie are very neglectful and don't care for their daughters much. Their dad hasn't been in the picture for years. Since they were little, their dad left them and never came along too often, until recently. Ever since their dad left them, their mom has been a complete different person. As if she isn't even a mom. She can't even keep a job or pays attention to her daughters at all. The only thing she can manage is staying home in bed all day.

The authors style affects the reading of this novel because sometimes the things the author describes is strong and hurtful. It made me want to put the book down a times because of how strong I felt about it. They're basically teenagers raising themselves. "Counted because things in my life had a way of disappearing on me, and I'd learned not to trust what I thought was there."  This quote, I felt strong about this because Dixie and Gem have had such a rough teenage years and the author made sure to address that. The author does make me believe them as people because this happens in real life. Even though the book is Fiction, I believe people do go through this and don't have an adult to rely on to help them through these years.

Throughout my teen years, I have been lucky enough to have both of my parents around and help me grow up and become the person I am becoming and want to become. I am thankful for having both of my parents. Unlike Dixie and Gem, I've had two adults to rely on and help me not go down the wrong path. Throughout the book, Gem and Dixie went down a wrong path and start to hangout with people they don't even know, they began to surround themselves around drugs and things they should not be around. Luckily, my parents have always been here for me to show me wrong from right and talk to me about the peer pressures and how hard being a teenager can be.

I can relate this book, only because I see this happen around me. Some people don't have their parents around and it doesn't always have to because their parents are divorced or not around. Sometimes it can be that their parents are always working, which leads them to not being around and they have to raise themselves. I rate this book a 5/5 and recommend it to any teenager going through a tough time.
